Ice Breakers

icebreakers

Icebreakers are put to good use in Jubilee - both in cell groups, and even in our Sunday celebrations. They are good fun and help break down any barriers we may have.
To give you a better idea of the icebreakers we use at Jubilee and the kinds of examples you will find in our book ‘Red Hot Icebreakers’.

Human Noughts and Crosses

For the more active group
Team game
Best with larger groups of 14+ players

Set out nine chairs in three rows of three, like a noughts and crosses board. Split the group into two teams and get them to stand on opposite sides of the seating area, facing one another. Give each team’s members a number from one to however many people there is in the group. Then call out three numbers and watch the players with those numbers dash for three seats in a row to win the game. The idea is to make a row of three horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Players cannot, however, make a line of three in the chairs immediately in front of them. This can be repeated as many times as wished, but be warned, it can get competitive!

Bum Spell

For the most committed and adventurous breakers of ice
Team game
2+ players

This game works like charades in that you must communicate something to your team, e.g. the name of a film, country or song, without speaking. The fun twist is that you must spell the word out with your, um, (how to say this politely?), your posterior. When the first word has been guessed, another team member goes up to get the next word and the wiggling continues. Words like Kazakhstan and Mississippi break the ice more quickly!

The Revel Game

Revels although most small chocolate treats can be used (for beginners)
For use in small group settings.

Everyone sits in a circle and takes a Revel chocolate from the bag as it is passed round. Each type of Revel has a question ascribed to it, so after the person has eaten their chocolate they answer the relevant question. Then move onto the next person until the whole bag of chocolates has been demolished. This is a really good get-to-know-you game and a gentle way to ease people into a small group setting.
Remember, you set the tone according to who is in the group. The questions can be fun, serious or challenging. It’s up to you.

Example questions could be:

  • What is your favourite pudding?
  • How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
  • What is God speaking to you about at the moment?
